Internet Security
Internet security is rapidly becoming an important consideration when building a
network. With the recent proliferation of news stories on hackers, viruses, and
Internet thieves, mainstream America is beginning to understand the power that a
single individual can gain by quietly sneaking into your network and downloading
your personal files, data and information.
Every networked computer that has access to the Internet is, to some degree, at
risk. But we dont want to scare you too much. The odds of a hacker wasting his
time on your personal network is slim. Compared to the allure of breaking into a
major government or corporate system, you dont have much to offer. This doesnt
mean, however, that it cantor doesnthappen. If someone is after nothing but
small-time financial or personal data, personal networks are perfect targets.
Fortunately, protecting your network from unauthorized access is both
inexpensive and easy. We highly advise you look into it.
Hardware Security Solutions
The most simple and flexible way to create an Internet firewall (a network
shield against unwanted intruders) is to install a piece of hardware into your
network that already has firewall software built into it. The most commonly used
firewall device is an Internet Router.
An Internet Router, which is installed between your Internet connection and the
rest of your network, protects your network by making your individual computers
virtually invisible to the outside world. The only externally recognized device
on your network will be your router.
Some routers, including the Linksys Cable/DSL Router, have firewall software
built into their internal construction. These routers offer the added security
of firewall software, making it much more difficult for somebody to decode your
routers data, thus making unauthorized access to your network virtually
impossible.
Software-only Security Solutions
By installing Firewall software onto your Internet Gateway computer, you are
essentially encoding your network data so that it will seem like gibberish to
anyone outside the network. While firewall software does exist in-and-of itself,
a home or small business user will likely want to buy an Internet Sharing
software product with a firewall built in. Without a router, your wont be able
to share your Internet data without an Internet Sharing software package.
If you have Internet Sharing software installed on your Internet Gateway
computer, all incoming Internet information will stop there, then be transferred
on to the computer for which it was intended. Users on the Internet wont
recognize that, behind the Internet gateway computer, there are computers
sharing your Internet connection.
Most of the top-notch Internet Sharing software products, such as WinProxy,
SyGate and All Aboard SE, have firewall capabilities.
