PowerLineTM Networking
With the growing popularity of high-speed Internet access, the demand to send
digital voice, video, and Internet data within the home increases continually.
The cost of installing wires to support this is expensive, disruptive, and
time-consuming. One cost-effective solution is the Linksys family of Instant
PowerLine products.
Capable of delivering up to 14 megabits per second (Mbps) of voice, video, and
Internet data over residential powerlines, the Linksys Instant PowerLine
products reduce the interference generated by appliances, electronic equipment,
power tools, etc. and turns your ordinary house wiring into a high-speed data
network. Your power outlets are no longer to be viewed only as power
receptacles, but also as Internet connection points.
PowerLine communications has been attempted for years, but had never worked very
well. Others have claimed success, only to find their products being returned to
them faster than they were shipped out. What happened? Product manufacturers
quickly realized that consumers found those first products difficult to install
and were not willing to invest much time in troubleshooting problems, such as
why the network worked for some occasions but not others.
So what has changed? Or why will consumers be satisfied with the Linksys family
of Instant PowerLine products?
The short answer Linksys Instant PowerLine products are based on groundbreaking
developments and modifications to existing, proven technology that, when
combined with the advancements of today's chip manufacturing processes, yield a
robust powerline technology.
A Difficult Medium
To fully understand the advantages of the Instant PowerLine product family, one
has to gain an understanding of the difficult medium that home power is.
Communication on the AC powerline is difficult because of unpredictable noise
and interference from sources such as halogen lights, vacuum cleaners, blenders,
hair dryers, etc. Also, the powerline is not controlled or constant over time.
As compared to Ethernet cabling, which is clean and has consistent
characteristics, the powerline can have numerous appliances and audio equipment
plugged in at any time turned on and off any time and run for any length of
time. The constant plugging and unplugging, turning on and off, of these
appliances throughout the day and evening causes the powerline characteristics
to constantly change. Trying to send data over this inconsistent medium is what
has stumped powerline technology companies for years.
So how can the Instant PowerLine product family technology guarantee successful
communication through a frequently changing medium? To begin describing the
magic, we need to understand the base technology behind it. The Linksys Instant
PowerLine product family is based on technology called OFDM, which stands for
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. OFDM is a scheme in which numerous
signals of different frequencies are combined to form a single signal for
transmission on the medium. OFDM is then used to find and automatically adapt to
the specific frequency combination that enables successful communication.
The technology used by the Instant PowerLine product family is constantly
monitoring the powerline medium for sudden changes. If there is a change, the
Instant PowerLine products sense the change and dynamically turn on and off
frequencies to find a set of frequencies at which successful communication can
occur. The benefits of dynamically turning off and on specific data-carrying
signals are apparent when adapting to an ever-changing communication path. But
the flexibility benefits go way beyond ensuring successful communication over
the powerline medium. By having this ability to turn on and off data signals,
the Instant PowerLine technology can also adapt when other licensed
communication services are being used or when Instant PowerLine products are
being used in countries with different regulations. By simply turning off
data-carrying signals that are competing with other signals of the same
frequency, the Instant PowerLine product family can successfully co-exist with
other services and adapt to different powerline scenarios.
With all shared media, the problem of security is always a concern. Wireless
technologies, since every transmission over the air is for all to hear, need to
ensure that only those for whom the transmission is intended can "decode" the
signal. Powerline media, although wired, have similar issues. In a typical U.S.
neighborhood, multiple homes share the same electrical power transformer-and the
same physical wire as well. In some cases, depending on how close the homes are
physically located, data communication within one home can travel across to your
neighbor as well. The Instant PowerLine technology has been carefully calibrated
to minimize the amount of data sharing that occurs between homes, while ensuring
that 100% coverage within the home is achieved. However, to completely ensure
that data protection is guaranteed, the Instant PowerLine technology includes
sophisticated encryption techniques built into the hardware so all data packets
are automatically encrypted prior to transmission over the powerline medium.
What results is clean transmission from one room of your house to the next room
while the data packets appear as noise to your neighbor. Each Instant PowerLine
product within your home can decode, or decrypt, transmissions from other
Instant PowerLine products in your home by using a key that is specific to your
home only. Likewise, your neighbor's Instant PowerLine products, using his or
her specific key, can decode only that home's transmissions. Building encryption
directly into the Instant PowerLine product family makes it impossible for
people in either home to understand what is being transmitted in the other home.
The Instant PowerLine Advantage
With multiple outlets in every room, residential powerlines are already the most
pervasive network in the world. As Internet use increases, broadband access
expands, and consumers plug a new generation of electronic devices into the Web,
the Instant PowerLine family presents a cost-effective, easy-to-integrate home
networking technology.
Linksys Instant PowerLineTM Products FAQ
Q. What are the Instant PowerLine Products?
A. Instant PowerLine is the Linksys brand name for high-speed powerline
communications technology products that provide data rates of up to 14 megabits
per second (Mbps) over existing powerlines in the home or office.
Q. What problem does Instant PowerLine technology solve?
A. Instant PowerLine technology solves earlier problems that had impeded
widespread usage of home powerline networking. Instant PowerLine technology
doesn't require any new wires and is both robust and affordable.
Q. What is the benefit of networking devices found in the home?
A. By networking devices, Internet access and high bandwidth services can
be shared.
Q. Have the Instant PowerLine products been proven to work?
A. Yes. Instant PowerLine products have been tested by the HomePlug
Powerline Alliance. Test results have shown a close to 100% outlet connectivity
success rate. All Instant PowerLine products meet the specifications defined by
HomePlug.
Q. Do the Instant PowerLine products cause interference with other home
networking or powerline products?
A. No. The Instant PowerLine products can co-exist with phoneline and
wireless networking technologies. Instant PowerLine operates in a different
frequency band than powerline control and can co-exist with technologies such as
X-10, CEBus, and LONworks.
Q. How do the Instant PowerLine products handle signal interference
between two adjacent homes? How is eavesdropping prevented?
A. The Instant PowerLine products use 56-bit DES security encryption to
ensure network separation between homes.
Q. Are there issues with power strips and Uninterruptible Power Supply
(UPS) systems?
A. No. Extensive testing has shown no problems associated with the use of
power strips and UPS systems.
Q. Will there be problems if I turn on or plug in devices like a power
drill or hair dryer?
A. No. If the powerline characteristics change during a session, the
Instant PowerLine products will sense the change and automatically adapt to
provide the most reliable data path connection.
Q. How do the Instant PowerLine products handle node addressing on the
network?
A. The Instant PowerLine products adhere to standard Ethernet addressing
protocols using destination and source MAC addressing. |
